ONDA Diffraction is a 3D-printed vase where a generative algorithm translates the language of nature into physical form: the same equations that describe wave diffraction have shaped and defined its formal structure.
The project explores the phenomenon of diffraction on two inseparable levels. As an algorithm, it generated the irregular textures wrapping the form, evoking waves bending around obstacles, scattering and reorganising through space. The glossy two-tone finish, half white and half black, does the rest: it reflects light creating moiré patterns, turning the vase into a living object.
Each piece is one of a kind: the transition between black and white varies naturally from piece to piece, appearing as a soft gradient in some, a sharp and high-contrast split in others.
Design & Materials
- Generative algorithm: Each curve follows mathematical wave dispersion principles
- Bicolor PLA: Half black, half white split creates dramatic contrast
- Glossy finish: High-shine surface emphasizes the sculptural depth
- 3D printed: Additive manufacturing captures organic complexity layer by layer
- Unique texture: Diffraction patterns create tactile richness across the surface

Material
This vase is crafted using PLA, a biodegradable and lightweight material derived from renewable sources such as cornstarch and sugarcane.
Unlike conventional plastics, PLA minimizes environmental impact, producing fewer emissions during manufacturing. At the end of its life, it naturally decomposes, leaving no toxic residues behind.
