Eleven species, twenty-two varieties each, sown once.
In botany a species gathers the plants that follow the same instructions, and a variety is a recognisable version within it. We borrow both words because here it works the same way.
The instructions, in our case, are an algorithm: eleven algorithms, eleven species. The seed is the number the algorithm starts from to build the surface; changing it does not give you another object, it gives you another variety of the same one.
The analogy stops here: a seed, once sown, does not come back; a number can be re-run forever. VAULT 22 runs twenty-two per species, 242 in all, and then closes.
Grooves climbing diagonally, the way water would run across a surface that turns. The seed moves them; the 25 cm height and the wide mouth stay as they are.
The variety is held for you while we answer, with the seed named in the reply. Printing starts once the piece is confirmed: 10–15 working days.
What does not change
The algorithm takes the seed, but never lets it reach the geometry: height, diameter, wall and mouth stay the species'. That is why a VAULT 22 variety is used exactly like the catalogue piece.
Where the difference is
What the seed moves is the deposition path: the texture is not a relief applied to the form, it is the route the nozzle takes, layer after layer. That is why it reads in raking light, and why you feel it before you see it.
How you tell them apart
Every piece carries its own seed engraved in the base, with the print date, and repeated on the certificate that comes with it. Two varieties of the same species are told apart by the code before the surface.
In the catalogue, CARSIA is always the same CARSIA: order it today or in two years and the surface is identical. In VAULT 22 each piece has its own, from a seed that is never used again.
